India is one of the largest tea producers in the world. Darjeeling tea produced in Tea Estates of Darjeeling is world famous. True Darjeeling Tea possesses a flavour and quality, which sets it apart from other teas. The major tea growing states are Assam, West Bengal, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal have low production. Tea plantation has also come up recently in states like Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Sikkim, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Bihar, Orissa, Mizoram etc. 78% of the country's total land area under plantation is located in North India. Out of the total, 53% land area is in Assam and 22% in West Bengal. Well distributed rainfall ranging around 2000 mm to 5000 mm is considered suitable for successful tea plantation. The monthly average maximum temperature ranging between 28 and 32 Degree C during April to September is good for the plantation. The six major Tea auction centers in India are, Calcutta, Guwahati, Siliguri, Cochin, Coonoor and Coimbatore.
