Aqua Farms are in great demand as investment opportunity among buyers. In India, both freshwater aquaculture and brackish water aquaculture is carried out. India ranks second in the world after China in Aqua farming. Apart from shrimp farming, the three Indian major carps namely catla, rohu and mrigal are very popular. In India 1.2 million hectares of land with brackish water area is available for farming. In addition to this, around 8.5 million hectares of salt affected lands are also available, of which about 2.6 million hectares land could be exclusively utilized for aquaculture. Freshwater aqua farm lands are spread out in eastern part of the country, West Bengal, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh followed by Punjab, Haryana, Assam and Tripura. Brackish water aquaculture is mainly concentrated on the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and West Bengal. Aqua culture is big business with 7 listed companies lead by Avanti Feeds which had a market cap of ~Rs.150 crore in year 2011-12
