Tur (Toor, Toovar, Arhar) is also called the pigeon pea. India is the largest producer of Tur accounting for more than 80 percent in area as well as total production in the world. Tur is grown largely in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. The major markets for tur trading are Indore, Bhopal and Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh, Jalgaon, Latur, Mumbai and Akola in Maharashtra Delhi, Kanpur, Hapur, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Gulbarga and Chennai. Tur grows well in warm tropical and sub-tropical climate. The crop prefers a fairly moist and warm climate during its vegetation period. Well drained, alluvial and loamy soils are very good for its cultivation. It grows very well in black cotton soil as well in red clay soils with proper drainage system. It does best on fertile and well- drained loamy soils. Arhar is a deep rooted crop. It is reputed for drought resistance and is a popular crop under dry land conditions. Cloudy weather and excessive rainfall at flowering time damage the crop to a great extent. Intercropping with short duration with crops like cowpeas, moong, maize is widely adopted. In India Tur is one of the most popular pulses and is used a variety of food preparations. Its an essential ingredient of Sambar. Dal curry is consumed all over India. Tur plant enriches soil through nitrogen fixation.
